I Lost My Mind

The work I have submitted for Threads relates to my own personal history and its connection and relevance to other women around the world. It is about my response to it as an artist, the visual threads I have woven in order to tell it, and how I have used my own visual language/narrative to overcome adversity and turn poison into medicine.

The threads of my story are about being in a controlling and abusive marriage for over 20 years, having the courage to leave, start again, and using art to be express vulnerability and anger, to heal, and to rise. It is a common story for all women, but one that is often taboo and silenced- the control that men can have over women. Also at the time I was working at a school where the head mistress and her young daughter were murdered by her husband, and this affected me (and everyone I worked with) deeply; made me want to use my voice as an artist to have these conversations, not bury them.
Ultimately my work is about overcoming difficulty and opening up a dialogue, but also creating a space for women to be seen, heard, and being present, allowing their own story to be told and recognized.
