Asked to do a portrait of the city of Stockton, this piece represents a city and a mayor making progress against all odds. The multiple layers of digitally stitched photos, a poem, and original drawings, invite viewers to dive more deeply into the dreams and the realities of a city thrusting
beyond their legacies.

I was in Jackson Heights NY, taking reference photos for an upcoming collaboration with singer/songwriter Tanuja Desai Hidier. The wealth of diverse cultures journeying together was irresistible. I pulled out my iPad and captured just a few people walking down the street. What drives where people live, what they do, who they hang with? What choices they might or might not have?

The Green guy was on an advert as I was awaiting my train. It was a Monday. I was late. I thought painting him on my iPad could infuse me with the peace he exudes. I entered the train and saw these two people with the seat between them empty. I painted them live, and put the Green guy already in the middle of my composition, between them.

Lisa Cirenza Inventory Report December 19 2017: 3 of 3
The crowd. You've just gotten off the tube and you have to get to the escalator, but all these people are trying to get to their trains. What a phenomenal assortment of individuals. We notice all of them, and yet, we see none of them. We're busy trying to find the most efficient way to that escalator. Probably amazing life stories hidden behind those faces.
Cirenza’s work examines the connective tissues that in her words “make us a single human species with very similarly sized shoes.” Adopted at the age of 6 weeks, she describes spending most of her youth walking in other people’s shoes to see if they fit. With a small semblance of identity, she started moving around the world, and once again found herself seeking the roots of our common humanity to find her fit. Her work reflects what she learned: empathy is the foundation for peaceful co-existence, and humour is the secret sauce.
She believes her art should reflect the age and society it is created in and for, and hopefully serve as a temporal testimony for future generations. She pushes coloured pixels and pigments around 2D surfaces often with manipulated photos. Using the iPad she paints live moments and the human energies that surround us anywhere at anytime, and using pigmented mediums she adds multiple dimensions to those visuals. She might photograph her painting and work on it digitally, or digitally create/paint, print and then work on it traditionally. Her work is iterative, and depends on the visual she’s attempting to create, often mirroring the iterative moments around her.
Layering moments in time as they are experienced, creating visuals with multiple human perspectives; she asks multi-layered questions, demanding the viewer to look and look again. We are pummeled with images. We are more connected than ever, but never more disconnected. She asks her viewers take more than a moment to look, to ponder, to celebrate, to challenge, and to connect with her art and their fellow human beings.
